8 self care strategies that help me manage my stress
Learning to set boundaries and tell people “No” was one of the best self care strategies I began to use to manage my stress. Setting healthy boundaries will create an expectation for others and they will begin to respect your space and your time. If you find it difficult to set healthy boundaries with others use these tips here.
Leave Work At Work.
Create a routine of unwinding from the work day before beginning to do activities at home so that it creates a separation of your time. Try not to take work home to further continue the separation.
The goal is to walk out of work and have no guilt about completing the task tomorrow. The goal is to walk out of work and leave all of the stress and anxiety there.
I have an entire post dedicated to work related stress, you can find here, because so many people struggle with it. Including myself.
Occasionally home life responsibilities can take over and leave you with no time or energy for yourself. It is important to set aside time to practice self care or it will rarely happen. Just as it is important to make sure the house is clean, it is important to ensure you do what refuels your tank.
The world will not end if you did not take out the trash but the lives of others will change if you do not practice self care to manage your stress. I recommend using this self care planner by Blessing Manifesting, it will be sure to keep you on track!
We have discussed this before, but I am mentioning it again because it is just that important! When you schedule time for your self care activity be sure to follow through each time. If you feel you are in a relaxed and calm state, that is even more of a reason to practice self care.
Be mindful and see if you are truly in touch with your emotions and needs or if you are suppressing anything. If you rarely practice self care you will rarely see results.
Mindfulness is any activity that allows you to tune in to what your body needs or what is currently occurring inside. It is excellent to practice this as a form of self care, as there is no better strategy than knowing what you need!
You can practice mindfulness by doing guided meditations, yoga, breathing techniques, coloring or painting, the list goes on. Practicing mindfulness has a way of slowing your mind and calming your body making it an excellent activity for managing stress.
Get Rid Of Guilt.
There is nothing wrong with practicing self care, though there are many times people will try to guilt trip you. There are multiple ways to get over that mindset either stop speaking with those individuals or set appropriate boundaries. What you take in, your mind begins to register as truth.
If you are listening to individuals that tell you that self care time makes you selfish, a bad parent, a bad friend, you will start feeling guilty and eventually stop implementing self care activities.
Be mindful that those same individuals will speak about you lashing out on your children, your friends, being irritable, all of which are a result of a poor self care regimen.
Detox everything! Your body, your mind and your spirit deserves a detox! Take time away from social media to assist in cleansing the mind. I detoxed social media for months and have awesome tips for it that you can read here.
Detox and reflect on who you surround yourself with. Are they adding positive energy to your life or stress? The individuals who are not adding positivity to your life in some way, may need their relationship with you re-evaluated.
Also, take time to do a veggie and fruit day, with plenty of water! Your body deserves a fresh start at least once a week!
Some say that sleep is self care in and of itself. While that is true, sleep also helps you be able to remember to do all of the other self care and stress reducing activities you need to throughout the day. Everyone is different but it is very beneficial to get at least 6-8 hours of sleep a night.
You must also have good sleep hygiene, going to bed and waking at similar times each day. Simply achieving 8 hours somehow throughout the day/night will not be as beneficial as 8 hours of REM sleep!
I hope these self care strategies help you develop and stick with your self care plan! The only way you will see improvements is if you are consistent and willing to let it work.
