5 Tips To Achieve Your Goals

Need help achieving your goals? I have outlined 5 tips to achieve your goals successfully.

We have all heard it before (or said it ourselves), “I have my short and long-term goals mapped out” but you never see them make stride- big or small- towards accomplishing those goals.

One of the easiest ways to fail at reaching your goal is to never try. What is the point of having a goal and no steps to get there? I have laid out 5 tips that have helped me reach my goals thus far in life.

Tip #1 To Achieve Your Goals

Your long term and short-term goals need to align with one another.

If my long term goal is to purchase a home in 10 years, then my short term goal needs to be to save $X,xxx in 5 years for a down payment.

Another example would be for weight loss if I want to lose 50 lbs. by the end of the year then my short term would be to change my eating habits and begin being more active.

Related Post: Exercise To Cope With Depression

So often I see people have long term goals to “be a millionaire” but short term goals are to “travel every year” see what I mean?

If I want to be a millionaire then my short term goal needs to be to become as educated as possible in my field and begin investing in myself.

A good example would be: “My long term goal is to buy a home”. Your short term goals would need to be: “Repair my credit” “Research homes and chose my style” “Budget and save $X “.

Basically a long term goal is your overall want and your short term goals are how you are going to achieve it.

Tip #2 To Achieve Your Goals

If you do not meet your deadline it is okay.

I have been a victim of this many times when it comes to losing weight. If I did not lose the 10 pounds I wanted to for the month, then I chuck everything up to a loss.

Instead, I need to notice that I did not have to jump to get into my jeans or I didn’t lose my breath going up my stairs. In short, every stride is important. A temporary setback in plans is okay BUT you must still have plans.

Tip #3 To Achieve Your Goals

Be patient.

Man, if I had a dollar for every time I heard that! From my education to my job to personal things, I like things done when I want them done!

I had to realize that everything happens when it is supposed to. If I did not get this job, it was not meant for me and I needed to patiently wait for MY job.

Tip #4 To Achieve Your Goals

Keep your goals updated and in plain sight.

I have my goals written on a draw erase board in my office. Every day, I am able to view them, remember what I need to do to get there, and take it day by day until I reach it.

via GIPHY

Tip #5 To Achieve Your Goals

Cut off non-supporters.

Let me be clear on this tip. A non-supporter is a person who continuously “throws salt” on your dreams, belittles your strides to accomplishing your goals and does not support you in staying focused to achieve your goal.

Cut those “friends” off. I am sure you pictured someone in your mind when reading the description.

The person who evaluates your goals, gives you tips to improve them and holds you accountable is a supporter, you just may not like criticism. It is fine to speak with individuals and let them know how you like to be supported in your strive for greatness.

As they say a “closed mouth don’t get fed”, you cannot be upset about how individuals are “supporting” you. You have to inform them of what works for you!

As always remember I am here to help, reach out!

This is a really helpful list. I really like that you point out that long and short goals have to be compatible; I think so many people never connect those dots and don’t supplement their big goals with small, realistic ones. I also can’t agree more with removing the people that “throw salt” on dreams and plans. Great post! 🙂

I agree with everything in this post wholeheartedly – it is so important to differentiate between short term and long term goals. Often, people will see a destination coming a lot faster than it should and taking your time, and relieving yourself of pressure is so important. Thanks for this well-written piece!

Great tips! And excellent point about it being okay if you pass personal deadlines without accomplishing your goal. I do that too and end up feeling like a total failure instead of focusing on how close I actually came to accomplishing my goal.

I agree with all of these! I used to set goals and not even think about how I could reach them. And then I wondered why I never did! It’s so important to constantly keep working towards your goals, little by little, and to adapt the deadlines and goals as you go. Great post!

I set goals, but am really bad at setting deadlines. I love how you mention that it’s okay to not meet every deadline. That’s one of the reasons I hated trying to lose weight because I didn’t lose as much as I had wanted. I realized that maybe weight wasn’t a good goal, and instead I should do something like “run every other day” which is easier to control.
